YES! US Senate Passes CARA, Combating Autism Reauthorization Act!
Excellent! The US Senate has now passed CARA, the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act, and it should soon be headed to President Obama's office where it has already been indicated the President would sign! The US has led the way in useful autism research and the only real hope for improved autism treatments and cures for autistic children and adults in Canada rest with American researchers.
As stated on Autism Votes.org, an Autism Speaks initiative:
Sept. 26 Bulletin!
CARA WINS FINAL APPROVAL IN THE SENATE!
NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 26, 2011) – The United States Senate this evening passed the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act of 2011 by unanimous consent, sending the bill to President Obama for his signature. Enactment of the bill, which the President has promised, will assure that federal support for autism, research, services and treatment will continue uninterrupted for another three years.
CARA would authorize a total of $693 million on continued biomedical and treatment research on autism and require further development of an overall strategic plan for the intensification, expansion and better coordination of federal efforts designed to help persons with autism and their families. The fight for CARA in the Senate has been led by Senators Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mike Enzi (R-WY).
CARA renews the Combating Autism Act which was signed into law on December 19, 2006 by President George Bush following a nearly unanimous Congressional vote. The CAA made a clear statement by the U.S. government on the public health emergency posed by the growing prevalence of ASDs, and the lack of adequate research, effective treatments, and services to address this urgent and growing crisis.
The bill was unanimously voted out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on September 7 and had been awaiting final Senate action. Recognizing the short time left for Congress to act, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) last week agreed to expedite a vote in the House where the bill cleared by two-thirds voice vote. The measure, HR.2005, sponsored by Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Mike Doyle (D-PA), attracted strong bipartisan support in both houses of Congress and was originally sponsored in the Senate by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY).

UK's National Health Service Misrepresents Autism
No Intellectually Disabled allowed on the DSM-5 Autism Spectrum Disorder ... or on this UK NHS version of the autism spectrum.
LONDON, Sep 26, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- There are more than half a million people affected by autism (autistic spectrum disorder) in the UK.
Although there is no cure for autism, there are a range of specialist education and behavioural programmes (often known as interventions) that have proved effective in improving the skills of children with ASD.
Autism awareness
Awareness of autism is high, but awareness that Asperger syndrome is a form of autism is low. According to the survey commissioned by NAS 92% of surveyed people had heard of autism but only 48% had heard of Asperger syndrome.
For more information on autism, please visit our Living with Autism section of the NHS Choices website.

Autism and the MMR Vaccine:Was Wakefield Confirmed by Wake Forest University School of Medicine Study?
I did a web search by the author's name and found the same article published in different places on the web on different dates. What I haven't found is what happened to the Wake Forest study? If anyone knows feel free to offer your information. HLD
According to a report in the UK Daily Mail, Scientists fear MMR link to autism, a study led by Dr. Stephen Walker of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina appears to confirm findings in the much maligned 1998 study by Dr. Andrew Wakefield. The research team are examining 275 children with regressive autism and bowel disease and, of 82 tested so far, 70 prove positive for the vaccine strain, not the wild strain, of the measles virus. The report also indicates that the this is the second study including the O'Leary 2001 study to confirm the Wakefield findings:

Autism Treatment Claims: The "Revolutionary" Brain Balance Program
On autism treatments I am very small "c" conservative. I wait for credible authorities like the US Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics to review the research literature and offer guidance on what constitutes evidence based effective autism treatments. I am NOT telling other parents what to do with their financial resources or their child's precious development time. I am simply saying I want to see reviews by credible authorities before I gamble my son's development, and possibly his well being, on "revolutionary" treatments.
The unbridled enthusiasm of the co-owner of a proprietary treatment doesn't do it for this autism parent.

The Huffington Post's Autism Big News Page Ain't What It Used To Be
When the Huffington Post merged with AOL there were some who wondered about the impact of the deal on the Huffington Post's positioning outside the news establishment. Emily Bell explored this concern at the UK's Guardian in AOL + Huffington Post = disaster? :

Wake Up New Brunswick Parents of Autistic Children! Our Never Ending Autism Residential Care & Treatment Disaster Will Not Change Unless We Change It!
Conor is now approaching 16 and is a very solid 6 feet tall. Like many youth with autism the changes of life that accompany adolescence and adult hood have had an impact on his development. Sleep is difficult for him at times and he suffers from some seizure activity. What this means, as he grows older, and his parents grow grayer, softer and weaker is that ultimately he will need residential care and treatment on a permanent basis. Unfortunately New Brunswick has chosen to ignore the real challenges of youths and adults severely affected by autism.

If Autism Is A Brain Disorder, Surely We Need To Look At The Brain?
Autism is one of the developmental disorders described as a brain based disorder in the presentation by Dr. Aditi Shankardass in which she makes the observation that if developmental disorders are brain disorders shouldn't we look at the brain in order to properly understand, diagnose and treat them?

Aditi Shankardass Offers Thought Provoking Second Opinion On Autism and Other Learning Disorders
I found this presentation on the use of EEG technology in assessing autism and other learning disorders to be very thought provoking. It is possible such technology will offer more accurate diagnosis of disorders and more specific treatments.

Autism Severity Differences Related To Autism Brain Structure Differences
As the father of a 15 year old son with severe autism deficits AND "profound developmental delays" I have found the insistence in some quarters of the alleged world autism community that there is no such thing as low functioning and high functioning autism, or severe and mild autism, to be both irrational and offensive. It is irrational and offensive to suggest that a very high functioning individual with high intelligence and excellent communication skills, capable of sitting on IACC committees and moving from one high profile media interview to the next, has the the same, or even similar, challenges as my 15 year old Dr. Seuss reading son who does occasionally suffer serious meltdowns in public settings or when frustrated or overwhelmed generally. It is offensive to see my son's challenges hidden in a media closet while those barely affected, if they are affected at all, by autism portray autism as a difference not a disability.
The media obsession with, and public perception of, high functioning autism and Asperger's success stories as being representative of autism, will not go away soon if at all. Public understanding of the challenges facing the severely autistic will probably remain limited for many years to come. The just reported Stanford/Packard autism brain imaging study though may be an important step forward for the family members and professionals who understand and face the realities of trying to help severely autistic loved ones or patients.
The study involved subjects with autism excluding Asperger's and related disorders. The authors claim to have mapped a topography of the autistic brain so clearly that they have been able to identify a relationship between severity of autism symptoms and severity of brain-structure differences. As with any small initial study replication studies involving more participants will need to be done to confirm the original findings. Given the promise of this initial study I would be shocked if such confirming studies are not undertaken promptly. Perhaps if the mainstream media can actually, finally see images of differences in autism brain structures they will stop ignoring differences in severity levels of those affected by autism disorders. Perhaps.
While autism diagnoses are now based entirely on clinical observations and a battery of psychiatric and educational tests, researchers have been making advances toward identifying anatomical features in the brain that would help to determine whether a person is autistic.
....
"We could discriminate between typically developing and autistic children with 92 percent accuracy on the basis of gray matter volume in the posterior cingulate cortex," said Lucina Uddin, PhD, the study's first author. Uddin is an instructor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford.
The above quotes are from the press release, posted in full below, for the Stanford/Packard MRI brain scan study published September 2 2011 in Biological Psychiatry, the official journal of the Society of Biological Psychiatry.

Autism Pundit's Sound Advice for Autism Speaks
Autism Pundit is the new autism blog by Dr. Sabrina Freeman, a mother of an autistic daughter, who has been a powerful advocate for evidence based treatment for children with autism, and whose "about the blogger" section states in more detail:
b) New York State has also recognized Intensive Behavioral Treatment as best practices since 1999(that was twelve years ago)!
c) Over 50% of states in the U.S. have passed autism mandates forcing insurance companies to pay for treatment!
Once the mover’s and shakers i.e. the well funded charities, in the autism community recognize the above facts, only then will we be able to move beyond awareness into early intensive behavioral treatment for all the children who desperately need it!
I have already listed Autism Pundit on my sidebar as one of my favorite blogs to visit. If you are interested in helpful autism commentary I recommend Autism Pundit a blog which is serious about helping autistic children and adults written by someone who is extremely well informed, experienced in real autism advocacy, and who is a top notch writer. I encourage you to take a look at Autism Pundit and make it one of your regular blogs to visit.
