Autism Stimming - Conor Stimming Video Hits 5000 Views

On April 27, 2008 I noted that Conor's Counting & Stimming YouTube video had hit 2,050 views. Now I am pleased to say that the video has been viewed 5,000 times. The viewing numbers have not been boosted by multiple CNN appearances by Conor. It is not a scripted, dramatization of what stimming might look like. It is an actual portrayal of Conor, a boy with Autistic Disorder, stimming with his favorite stim object, a straw.

I am pleased that so many interested persons have seen the video and have seen what stimming looks like Conor style ... with no agenda and no pretense. For Conor stimming is not a language, or abstract form of communication with distant objects, it is a very immediate, physical and sensory activity which he enjoys and which helps him stay calm. As simple as that.

Not Goin' Back CD Launch By Cathy Hutch

Last night I attended the Not Goin' Back CD Launch by Cathy Hutch at the Musiplex in Fredericton. Cathy has a tremendous voice and she gave it her all on every song, leading off with Not Goin' Back a song that she hopes will inspire people, even one person would be worth it, to make healthier life choices.

Above Cathy poses with BJ McKelvie before they both poured their hearts into I'm In Here the song for autism that is a hit on YouTube with 9,914 views as I type these words. And it is receiving play on radio stations around the world. In the bottom picture Autism Society New Brunswick vice president Lana Thompson helps out at the door.

Cathy also spoke about her personal connection to autism. She has a profoundly autistic adult daughter who is living in a residential care home in New Brunswick.

Today I pledge to continue; I Pledge to continue to fight for the availability of effective autism treatments; I Pledge to continue to fight for a real education for autistic children; I Pledge to continue to fight for decent residential care for autistic adults; I Pledge to continue to fight for a cure for autism; I Pledge to continue finding joy in my son but not in the autism disorder that restricts his life; Today, and every day, I Pledge to continue to hope for a better life for Conor and others with autism, through accommodation, care, respect, treatment, and some day, a cure; Today, and every day, I Pledge to continue to fight for the best possible life for Conor, my son with autistic disorder.

Because purely genetic diseases do not rise precipitously, the corollary to a true autism increase is clear — genes only load the gun and it is the environment that pulls the trigger. Autism is best redefined as an environmental disease with genetic susceptibilities."

We should be investing our research dollars into discovering environmental factors that we can change, not more poorly targeted genetic studies that offer no hope of early intervention. Pesticides, mercury, aluminum, several drugs, dietary factors, infectious agents and yes — vaccines — are all in the research agenda.
