A Nice Afternoon Trail Walk

The temperature is starting to cool a bit and turn toward early autumn after an unusual summer. With the cooler morning air Conor put on a Dad shirt over his shirt for some extra warmth. And we headed out on the trail this afternoon for a nice walk. My shirt seems to fit Conor a bit better around the belly than it does me. Hmmmm.

Does Connor like to walk outside? Mine used to, but has suddenly become overwhelmed in visually open spaces like outside, Home Depot, etc.

Conor and I have enjoyed a lot of outdoor walks together over the last few years. There was a time when he would not cross a large field like the one at a park here in Fredericton called Odell Park.

We walked ahead a bit, still within easy reach if necessary, and with clear visibility, when he sat down screaming. We refused to turn back. Conor continued to scream but we stood and waited until he got up and came toward us across the open area. Then we continued on.

It may sound harsh but it worked.

Harold, the photos of your son are always beautiful...I still can't get over how much he looks like a man now. On another, sad note, if you have not already, take a look at the video on Cult of Recovery today http://thecultofrecovery.wordpress.com/2009/08/29/counting-my-blessings/ which shows the very harsh reality of severe autism...it would be good to show the CBC and others among the neurodiversity crowd.
