CARD Study Finds Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Ineffective Treatment for Children with Autism

CARD, the Center for Autism and Related Disorders, Inc., has conducted a double-blind placebo-controlled trial which found that HBOT, consisting of 24% oxygen delivered at 1.3 atmospheres of pressure, does not have a significant effect on symptoms of autism. The study is summarized on the CARD blog.

  1. Seizures are a co-morbid condition of some children with autism. HBOT has has been known to show significant improvement in helping children in healing their seizures as well as their immune system.

Remarkable improvements have been seen in children's sleep patterns, calmness, acquisition of skills, and a decrease in seizure activity.

Before implementing any type of HBOT therapy always be vigilant. Being referred to a reputable physician and/or reputable biomedical doctor for HBOT treatment is of utmost importance.

  2. I think before 'throwing the hyperbarics out with the bath water' - there should be more studies done with oxygen at higher levels (1.5 atm) in both mild and hard chambers and then we would know for once and all what pressure to use (if any) for helping our kids.

I wonder how a study with a HARD chamber (more oxygen) would have done at 1.5 vs. this mild/soft chamber study. My son uses hard chamber because it has been proven to be more effective than the soft chamber. He dives with EMTs and we've seen amazing results. I wouldn't waste any money on a soft chamber dive, plus they aren't as safe. I would chose ABA over HBOT anyday though, but we do both!
