Autism Reality NB Reviews Alex Plank's "Autism" Reality Video

Alex Plank a young man with an Asperger's diagnosis, apparently a very, very mild version of Aspergers, has produced a video called "Autism Reality". The video can be accessed at Static Vox.

In the video, posted on a Facebook thread started by Lisa Jo Rudy on which I participated, Mr. Plank mentions the autism spectrum a few times. And he includes interviews of some nice young people agreeing with Mr. Plank that autism is a "good" thing.

I offered the following video review on the FB discussion thread:

"Autism Reality Alex?

With respect, the autistic children like the boy who died recently in Nova Scotia, like my son who went missing, walking through dangerous traffic, the many who are never found safe might disagree. The autistic children who injure themselves with dangerous head banging, severe biting, chewing on their cheeks or starving themselves because of extreme taste and food texture aversions might disagree. The non verbal autistics living in institutional care might have a different perspective. I am glad though that you paid lip service to the concept of a spectrum of autism in your production. And I hope you, Ms Chew and Ms Rudy don't mind me mentioning some of these other autism realities.

Other than that it is a nice video, lots of good communication, good social interaction, lots of high functioning skills like driving, attending busy, crowded events, good video production skills and no behavior challenges. And of course there are no cognitive impairment issues. Good idea not to confuse the viewing public with that whole "comorbidity" thing.

Two suggestions if you ever edit the video though. One, maybe you could mention the fact that the autism spectrum refers to a spectrum of "disorders". Two, maybe you could add the dates that Einstein and Van Gogh received their autism diagnoses.

Why Autism? An Excellent Question

"at this moment some one with autism is being born, the question is W H Y"
Kevin Fox, UK autism dad, posted on facebook
Hopefully, some day in the not too distant future, researchers and public health authorities will ask themselves the question Kevin Fox asked on facebook. WHY autism? Simply assuming that autism is 100% genetic is not science. It is long past time for the "it's gotta be genetic" mindset identified by Teresa Binstock in 1999 to be put aside and research conducted to understand all of the causes and triggers of autism - genetic, biological and environmental. If those causes or triggers include vaccines or vaccine ingredients then so be it. This parent, and most parents, want to know why their child has an autism disorder. With numbers of autism diagnoses rising society has an interest in knowing W H Y.
Why autism is a question which remains unanswered. Public health authorities and researchers who are afraid to explore all possible answers to that question for fear that the answer might point to vaccines, or to industrial products, should step aside and let real scientists and researchers, those with open minds and without conflicts of interest weighing them down, do the necessary research to answer it.
Why autism? Let's get busy and answer that excellent question.

MY DAD IS WALKING TO OTTAWA TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT AUTISM! Facebook Group

Right now a dedicated Dad, Stephan Marinoiu, in a real display of courage is walking from Toronto to Ottawa to raise awareness for autism. His daughter Lia has started a Facebook Group called MY DAD IS WALKING TO OTTAWA TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT AUTISM!

Autism Party of Canada/Parti d'Autisme du Canada

Governments across Canada borrow information, tactics and strategies from each other for a variety of purposes, sometimes a constructive exchange of information to help provide better services to citizens. Other times, and it has happened with autism, they exchange ideas to help them to deflect or defeat the citizens calls for services. A few years ago many jurisdictions, including New Brunswick, shifted primary responsibility for provision of autism services from their Health Departments to their Family Services department. This was, in part at least, an element in governmental attempts, for purposes of then ongoing or anticipated legislation, to re-characterize autism intervention services from a medically necessary, universally available, health service to a means test oriented family service.

To help deal with governments who have been reluctant to provide autism services in all jurisdictions and of all political stripes in Canada I have started a grassroots discussion forum on Facebook called the Autism Party of Canada/Parti d'Autisme du Canada. Hopefully the forum will provide members with information and ideas to use in public discussion with the media and political parties before, after and DURING election campaigns. Charitable autism organizations can not generally stand up to government. They are hobbled by charitable tax status requirements and government grant generated conflicts of interest. An Autism Party of Canada could work with those organizations but go beyond their limitations in dealing with government and provide a firmer response to those in power who make decisions affecting the lives of autistic people in Canada.
